When it comes to leadership in primary care, few people understand the challenges better than Dr. Clare Sieber. As a GP with over 13 years of experience and a background in mediation, leadership development, and governance, Clare founded Well-led to help GP practices and PCNs improve their leadership structures and workforce management. Now part of Redmoor Health, Well Led is offering practical solutions to one of the most pressing issues in general practice: effective leadership.

Redmoor Health Acquires The Well Led Practice

In December 2024, Redmoor Health acquired The Well-led Practice, expanding its leadership and workforce development support for GP practices, PCNs, and ICBs. This move brings leadership training and digital transformation together, ensuring practices get the tools and expertise needed for sustainable growth.

Dr. Clare Sieber, co-founder of Well-led, now serves as Chief Medical Officer at Redmoor, helping embed leadership, resilience, and efficiency into primary care support. By combining Well-led’s leadership training with Redmoor’s digital solutions, the partnership aims to strengthen leadership in GP practices, support workforce retention, and enhance patient care.

The Journey to Well-led

“I never woke up one day and thought, ‘I’m going to start a company called Well-led,” Clare laughs. “I’ve always been the type of person who seizes opportunities and follows where my experience leads me. After working as a GP and supporting practices through local medical committees, I saw a huge gap when it came to leadership skills in general practice.”

Clare, who also has a law degree and experience as a mediator, saw first-hand how GP partners, practice managers, and PCN leaders were often placed in leadership positions without formal training. “We’re trained to be clinicians, not business leaders. And the leadership styles we’ve been exposed to, particularly in NHS hospital settings, are not always the best models to follow. So I wanted to create something that supports everyone in a practice—not just those in senior positions—but every team member, because good leadership is about the whole team.”

What is Well-led and How Does It Help Practices?

Well-led is a digital platform designed to help GP practices and PCNs develop their leadership capabilities. The platform offers self-directed assessments, exercises, and resources to help staff at all levels build leadership skills, improve teamwork, and ensure compliance with CQC’s ‘Well-led’ domain.

“The idea is simple but powerful,” Clare explains. “Practices can roll it out across their teams, allowing individuals to assess their leadership skills, access resources, and complete exercises to improve. Leadership isn’t just about the GP partner or practice manager—it’s about making sure the whole team is strong because you’re only as good as your weakest link.”

Tailored for Primary Care

Originally used in hospital trusts and public health organisations, Well-led was adapted specifically for general practice. “Primary care is unique—it’s made up of small teams, staff are often promoted from within, and compliance with CQC’s Well-led requirements is essential. So we tweaked the platform to ensure it supports leadership development while also helping practices meet regulatory requirements.”

One of the standout features of the platform is its ability to provide evidence for CQC compliance. “With Well-led, practices can confidently demonstrate that they are meeting leadership and governance standards. Everything is mapped to the CQC framework, making inspections much smoother.”

Beyond Software: A Supportive Community

Since launching the Well-led platform 18 months ago, Clare and her team have expanded their offering beyond just software. “We now provide workshops, CQC mock inspections, and leadership training sessions. We’ve also brought in Gary Hughes, a former practice manager and leadership expert, to offer additional support. Practices using Well-led can access quarterly coaching, mentoring, or team training sessions with Gary, ensuring they get practical, hands-on help.”

Exciting Developments with Redmoor

Now that Well-led is part of Redmoor, Clare is excited about the opportunities ahead. “Redmoor’s focus on digital transformation aligns perfectly with our leadership approach. You can’t achieve real transformation without strong leadership, and together we can offer a holistic approach—helping practices not only adopt new technology but also ensure they have the leadership skills to make it work.

A new version of the Well-led platform has also just launched, with updated content, better usability, and new trial access. “For the first time, practices can trial the platform to see how it works. They can log in, complete a leadership assessment, and access sample resources before making a commitment. We want to make it as easy as possible for practices to get started.”

Looking Ahead: Workforce and Wellbeing Support

One of the big focuses for 2025 is developing structured leadership support for PCNs and ICBs. “We’re working on three- to six-month leadership development programmes that combine Wellled’s digital tools with in-person workshops and coaching. The goal is to provide a clear leadership journey for practices, helping them assess their strengths, implement changes, and measure improvements over time. Strong leadership leads to a happier workforce, which means better patient care and a more sustainable practice.”

Balancing It All

So how does Clare balance being a GP, entrepreneur, and Chief Medical Officer at Redmoor? “Honestly, it’s a bit of a juggle, but I thrive on it. I get bored easily, so having lots of different things to do works well for me. And I have an amazing husband who isn’t career-driven like me—he focuses on family and makes sure everything runs smoothly at home, which allows me to focus on my work.”

Final Advice for GP Practices

When asked what single piece of advice she’d give to practices struggling with leadership, Clare keeps it simple: “Get the basics right. One of the biggest issues I see is practices avoiding performance management because they don’t know how to do it or they’re scared of conflict. Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room; it’s about setting clear expectations, having proper processes in place, and making sure the whole team feels supported.”

From ensuring proper line management structures to having clear governance and documentation, Clare emphasises that small changes can have a massive impact. “Strong leadership doesn’t just benefit staff—it improves patient care, reduces stress, and makes practices more sustainable. And that’s exactly why we built Well-led.”
